Discussing Beekeeping today, what you need to know if you are just thinking about keeping bees; the apiary set up, equipment needed, hive management and honey.

   
         
         
         
 

Course Programme:
3 hours, 7pm - 10pm

 

What To Expect:

 
 

 

1. The Honey Bee
The bee colony, biology and life cycle

2. Equipment and Costs
Hive equipment, frames, wax, tools, personal protection

3. The Apiary
Apiary layout, siting the hives, responsibilities and safety

4. Managing Honey Bee colonies
Inspections, swarm control, uniting and moving colonies

5. Bee Health and Diseases
Bee diseases, pests & other problems, how to recognize & treat them

6. Honey and Importance of Plants
Bee necessities, honey harvesting, equipment & costs

7. Information, Help and Support
Resources, books & magazines, local organizations, obtaining bees

 

An informal evening spent with others interested in beekeeping. A wealth of information from a highly experienced beekeeper and a chance to see the different equipment available, along with a useful pack of course notes to take away.

Light refreshments will be provided, including tea, coffee, water, and a 'honey-themed' cake.

Parking is available at the entrance to our farm and our training room is just short walk down our track.

Please arrive at 6.45 for a prompt 7pm start

What To Bring:

Just bring yourself, confirmation of your booking, a notebook and any questions you may have.

Amanda is a professional ecologist who has been keeping up to 25 colonies of bees for about fifteen years. During that time she has attained British Beekeepers' Association theory modules 1 to 7 with credits and distinctions and the Intermediate certificate. On the practical side she has the Basic Assessment and the General Husbandry Certificate making her a 'Qualified Beekeeper'. She has also won prizes at the National Honey Show for honey and other products.
