There are over 270 bee species in the UK and all are pollinators. In the morning, learn about bumblebees biology, ecology, decline and how we can help them. In the afternoon you will learn all about honey bees, and be given the opportunity to look in a working beehive. The morning with Nikki Gammans will cover the identification of our most common bumblebee species that you will find in your garden or any outdoor space. With a mix of theory and practical tips for identification, we will have a look at finding and identifying the bees around our farm. The afternoon with Josh Dean will involve looking inside a working beehive seeing the colony structure, nest and honey stores and how to identify the queen bee, workers and drones. Fortunately, there is much that can be done to benefit bees. It is entirely possible for individuals to help bees without owning much land! Perhaps the simplest thing to do is to plant some bee-friendly plants in your garden, to flower between March and September. Throughout the day you will learn how to help them in much more depth. |
