A Morning Course

  The Basics Of Beekeeping  

A chance to review & revise the essentials prior to taking the BBKA Basic Exam.
Covering the exam format; this course will help to prepare the beekeeper for taking this important assessment in the basic skills and knowledge of the craft.

A Swarm Control course is held in the afternoon.  If both courses are booked you will receive a complimentary lunch. 


Course Programme: 
3 hours: 9.30am - 12.30pm


What To Expect:



1.     The exam format
Types of questions & practical tasks will be explained. including the interpretation of the practical assessment, oral questioning in beekeeping and the natural history, swarming and pests and diseases.  Discussing the depth of knowledge required.

2.  A typical examination
Using classroom-based props. there will be a chance to practice and critique a typical examination, including manipulation and equipment, the practical assessment of the candidate's ability to handle bees and beekeeping equipment.  The ability to interpret what is observed.  The oral questions on the knowledge of the Natural History and Beekeeping, swarming, swarm control and effects, diseases and pests.

Aimed at those who have kept bees for several years & meet the BBKA EXAM entrance requirements.

An informal morning spent with others interested in Beekeeping.
A wealth of information from a highly experienced beekeeper who regularly conducts the exam, along with a useful pack of course notes to take away.

Refreshments will be provided, including tea, coffee and a 'honey-themed' cake.

Parking is available at the entrance to our farm and our training room is just a short walk down our track.

This course is classroom based, however, if the bees, time and weather allow then we may visit a hive.

What To Bring:

Just bring yourself, confirmation of your booking, a notebook and any questions you may have, along with a bee suit, gloves and wellies (please contact us in advance if you need to borrow a suit).

If you have any dietary requirements please let us know in advance.
Please arrive at 9.15am for a prompt 9.30am start.

Mike has been a Beekeeper since 1972. He is the ex-chairman and current President of the Hastings & Rother Beekeeping Association. (H&R BKA). He represents the division for H&R BKA at Sussex Beekeeping Association and is an examiner for the BBKA Basic and General examinations.
