NEW LEGISLATION FOR 2016:

Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use

New laws came into effect in April 2016, restricting certain rodenticides to professional certified users only.  This has meant a change to the products available for 'garden farmers' to purchase either in a store or on-line.  Pack sizes are now limited.

Although at first our thoughts were 'not another piece of legislation!' this one does have a purpose and good intent:  It has been felt that ameteur use of rodenticides is adding to the problem of rodents becoming immune and is also affecting important wildlife.

HSE have introduced a UK Rodenticide Stewardship Scheme to restrict the availability of rodenticide products.  This scheme is to ensure rodenticides are used responsibly and are not affecting non-target animals.

This scheme restricts buyers to certain poison types and purchases to a maximum package size of 1.5kg.

Farmers, gamekeepers and professional pest controllers will only be able to buy any other stewardship label products if they hold certified proof of competence or are a member of an approved farm assurance scheme.

More information can be found on the CRRU website:  www.thinkwildlife.org

RAT FACTS:

10 rats produce 146,000 droppings and 54 litres of urine per year
50% of fires on farms are caused by rats
Rats are sexually active at just 2-3months old, they have 5 litters per year with 7-8 young per litter

ACT RESPONSIBLY:

In line with the new CRRU (Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use) scheme, all rodent control should be carried out to the following steps:

Always have a planned approach
Always record quantity of bait used and where its placed
Always use enough baiting points
Always collect and dispose of rodent bodies
Never leave bait exposed to non-target animals and birds
Never fail to inspect bait regularly
Never leave bait down at the end of the treatment
