Mantel Farm Newsletter - April 2021

Easter Weekend, Our pigs arrive and hens can go outside

This year we will be open on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday and we are pleased to say our barn will be re-opened for you to see the chickens.  Distancing arrangements will be in place; please see full details below...

Our barns are bursting with hens, so it is fantastic news that we can now let our hens back outside !  Having just checked the Defra website, it has been updated to say that poultry and other captive birds no longer need to be housed from today, Thrusday 1st April.  The risk of avian influenza to both wild and kept birds has been reduced to 'low’ however it is stressed that recent cases in commercial flocks emphasise that high standards of biosecurity remain essential

If you are looking to re-stock or start you chicken keeping over the Easter holidays then we have plenty of hens for sale, with a large flock of Hybrids and Pekins to choose from.  If you are looking for something a little different then we will have flocks of Pure breeds and Quail in a few weeks time.  As we are still operating with limited access we recommend booking an appointment to see and choose chickens so we can spend time with you when you arrive.

With few people being able to see our chickens and bees recently we have been trying to capture clips of our animals on video.  Tracy has been popping extra clips on our facebook page and Josh and Roger have been busy in the apiary; their first two inspections can now be seen on youtube more details below...

This year's little pigs arrive on Friday, so the recent warm weather has been very welcome to help dry out the pens after so much winter rain.  Don't forget if you are visiting over the weekend to take time to say hello to them - they will be in the pig pen by the carpark, through our new bee-garden

With lockdown easing, our Training Courses can again begin from April so why not have a look at the many courses we have on offer - they make great presents as we can post a training certificate for you to share as a gift.

Wishing you a Happy Easter from Kerry, Jason and all at Mantel Farm.

Are you hoping to use your garden more this year?  Why not join us on one of our new courses looking at growing herbs and edible plants in your back garden.

Local Jams for sale...

New Product - Locally hand made Jams... Great tasting local produce

You just never know what jems (or jams!) are just around the corner - We really should have realised sooner that 'Martha and Ed's' local jams were bubbling away just over the road in Marthas kitchen!!  So having finally put 2 and 2 together we are really pleased to be selling these lovely 'really local' jams, marmalades and chutneys in our shop

6 lovely flavours to choose from - Each £3.50

Quail for sale...

Quail for sale...

Our Quail will be available again in April

These little birds make great pets, are easy to care for, lay lots of tasty little eggs and take up very little space.  Quail can have a reputation for being extremely flighty, but our little hybrids are very calm (we have kept many quail as pets - one even travelled on our summer holiday and spent time sitting on the beach with us!!).

Notes from our Apiary...

This week the blossam has been buzzing with bees..

This year we plan to record our apiary inspections so you can get a glimpse of what is happening.  Our first Feb inspection was a little glum, with 2 of the 5 colonies dying out over winter, but we had expected to find this from earlier observations of the hive entrance.  Our second inspection confirmed our thoughts on how the colonies are faring as we had seen 2 really busy hives with bees returning with legs loaded with pollen, but one had been a little slower with bees flying in and out but not working anywhere near as hard.  Both of these video clips are now available on youtube for you to watch, we hope you find them interesting.

Amandas Beekeeping notes ...

There are lots of flowers out now and it has been warm enough for the bees to be quite active and bring in plenty of pollen and nectar...

However, there have been very few days warm enough to do an inspection, but with few other commitments I have been able to make use of these few days and inspect all my colonies ....
