During June we will be taking part in the Wildlife Trusts '30 days Wild' and to kick things off we will take our Tuesday Team Meeting outside to enjoy a Big Wild Breakfast in the fresh air....
We have been busy planting our new bee garden and veg patch, it is much later than we planned due to the cold and wet weather but most seeds and plants are now in the ground so fingers crossed for some warmer weather. Our lawn is looking lush with clover and daises after 'No-Mow-May' and is now attracting lots of bees, our Geese really help with the lawn at this time of year, liking only the grass and turning their nose (beaks) up at the clover, but they do occasionally turn to the flower bed snapping off the new shoots with a guilty look around to see if anyone is watching! Thankfully we can replace damaged plants at the Crowhurst Horticultural Society Plant Sale on the 5th June 10am-noon.
Our courses have a 'Bee-theme' during June with our beekeeping taster day and beginners beekeeping course, but we are have our first bumblebee experience day with Nikki Gammons of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. Not only will we spend a great day finding out how we can identify, help and plant for the pollinators in our gardens, this course also includes a years membership to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - (a great present for Fathers Day!).
We will be at 2 events during June - our first is a virtual event for the Biodiversity and Climate Crisis Summit on the 2nd June and then we will be back at the South of England Show on the 11th 12th and 13th June, our first shows in over a year! ... more details on both events can be found below...
Our June flock of hybrid hens have now arrived at the farm and we will have our next flock of quail arriving soon. The pure breeds have settled well and little Sablepoots are so friendly we are spending far too much time with them!
With Covid restrictions easing we are pleased to welcome more people back into our shop. We are still offering collection appointments for chickens to spread customers through the day but you are also welcome to call into the shop between 10am and 4pm on a Friday and Sunday.
Lets hope we can all enjoy a lovely sunny June outside...
With our best wishes from Kerry, Jason and all at Mantel Farm.
