As Scottie swings into Christmas, we look forward to Chicken Chatters in the New Year...
Last Sunday was the first day with the Christmas decorations up in our shop, and after a rush of customers at 10am it felt very festive to stand by the log burner with a cup of tea, especially on such a cold day. We look forward to seeing you all in our shop over the next few weeks to stock up on your chicken feed and other animal supplies before we take our short winter break. Don't forget its also a chance to get some lovely eco-friendly stocking fillers as well as our special sausages for your Christmas feasts.
As many of you will already know, most years we have held our 'Festive-Friday' to share mince pies and hot drinks around our fire. Although we were all looking forward to this years Festive Friday going ahead, sadly with the recent tightening of covid requirements for shops we feel it is best left for another year. We will really miss the opportunity to chat with our customers about their chickens, bees and other topics of garden farming, so to give us all something to look forward to in the spring we have decided to hold the first of a series of evening get-togethers. The first one we are calling 'Chicken Chatters', this will be an evening of questions and answers hosted by Jason. We are hoping this will bring people together to have general discussions around the subject of chicken keeping. Book your tickets early as places are limited - read more below.
Once again, in order to stop the spread of bird flu across the country, it has become necessary for everyone to house their poultry undercover in an enclosure. This comes particularly hard on birds that are used to be out free-ranging. With this in mind we have been trying to come up with ways to help keep them occupied and entertained. So, over the next few weeks we will be offering on our social-media pages, help and advice for ways to keep your birds happy during the winter months. We also have a new home-made product at Mantel Farm (and look out for more to come), so why not get your hens in the swing of Christmas with our version of the 'Chicken-Swing', the ideal Christmas gift for your birds - more information below.
Christmas Opening Hours:
Last Shop Day: Sunday 19th December 2021
Re-opening Sunday 9th January 2022
With our best wishes
from Kerry, Jason and all at Mantel Farm.

Feeding your Bees in winter...
This week Josh chats about the benefits of feeding your bees at this time of year and what to use...
Amandas Beekeeping notes ...
Bees’ behaviour is fascinating, even after nearly 20 years with them, they frequently cause me to wonder. The latest being last week (20th November), when I finally decided to bump off a nucleus which was too sensitive to me passing nearby and raking leaves and would go for the head without warning. I could not tolerate a larger colony with that trait...
